Biography

William was born in 1926. He was the son of William Harris and Ila Thompson. He passed away in 1974.

William Hasting Harris, II, called Toby, died in Baton Rouge of a heart attack. He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

The following article describes some of William's Episcopal church activities:

William H. Harris II, well known Baton Rouge businessman, was installed as diocesan chairman of the Louisiana Episcopal Laymen in ceremonies held Saturday night at Camp Hartdtner, near Pollock.

The annual Episcopal Laymen's Conference is being held this weekend at the Episcopal camp and conference center.

"To paraphrase Mr. Kennedy," Harris said in his inaugural address, "I want this to be a year of 'What can I do for my church?' not 'What can my church do for me?'

"In this vein, I would like to emphasize personal evangelism during this year. In these times of hatred and unrest, the burden of keeping our heads above water is going to rest with the hard core of 'doing' Christians, not 'sitting' and 'listening' Christians."

A member of an old Episcopal family, Harris has many connections in East and West Feliciana parishes. He has been area chairman of the Baton Rouge Convocation of Louisiana Episcopal Laymen, has served as diocesan chairman of the retreat committee and of the Advent Communion, and this past year was diocesan vice chairman.

He is a member of the Jamestown Society and other historical societies, and holds memberships in Downtown Exchange Club of Baton Rouge and the Brotherhood of St. Andrew.

Harris was educated at Sewanee Military Academy and Columbia University, and was confirmed by the late Bishop William Manning in the Cathedral of St. John Divine in New York City. [1]

Interment

William is buried in Roselawn Cemetery, Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. [2]
