Biography

Schuyler G. Harris was born about 1804 in Albemarle County, Virginia, to Matthew M. Harris and his wife, Nancy (Blaydes) Harris.

Schuyler first married Elizabeth (Woods?) on 31 May 1833 in Nelson County, Virginia. They had one child, a daughter named Ann Elizabeth, born around 1834. Elizabeth died, but her year of death is unknown as of this writing.

Schuyler then married his cousin, Sophia E. Roberts, on 25 November 1841 in Nelson County, Virginia. They had no known children, but Sophia helped to raise young Ann.

Schuyler, Sophia, and Ann appear on the 1850 U.S. Federal Census (although Schuyler's name is incorrectly listed as "Akilar G. Harris"). Schuyler lists real estate worth $7,500. The 1850 U.S. Census Slave Schedule shows Schuyler (again incorrectly spelled, this time as Shiler G. Harris) with 24 slaves. Sophia does not appear to have a separate listing.

Schuyler and Sophie appear again in 1860 U.S. Federal Census in Nelson County. Sophia's relatives are nearby, with younger brother Waddy W. Roberts next door. Schuyler and Sophia's plantation is very prosperous, and in 1860 Schuyler G. Harris lists real estate valued at $5,500 and personal estate valued at $30,000, a value much larger than anyone else on that particular page of the census. Schuyler is listed in the 1860 U.S. Census Slave Schedule with 36 slaves.

  • Research Note: An FSP needs to be made of the enslaved on this schedule.

The 1870 U.S. Federal Census is the final one to list both Schuyler and Sophia (listed this time as "Sophy E"). Circumstances have changed greatly, and while the real estate listed is still valued at $5,120, the personal estate Schuyler lists in 1870 is valued at $510.

The 1880 U.S. Federal Census shows Schuyler living in daughter Ann's household in Scottsville, Albemarle County, Virginia. He is a widower, so Sophia has died sometime before this, but the year of her death is unknown at this time. Schuyler's year of death is also unknown.
