Biography

John was born on 11 JAN 1731 in Virginia.[1]

John married Obedience Turpin on 27 August 1754.[2]

John was a business partner with General George Washington.[3]

John is listed in the 1756 Chesterfield County, Virginia Tithables List.[4]

John Harris and his wife Obedience were the parents of John Harris, whose widow Rebecca applied for a pension in his name in 1812.[5]

The FamilySearch links apparently supporting "Jordan" as his middle name led to an entry for his son, Jordan Harris (born 20 May, christened 25 July, both in 1763), that showed the father as John Harris.[6]

During the American Revolutionary War, John served on The Committee of Safety of Cumberland and Isle of Wight Counties, Virginia from 1775-1776 [7].

In the 1783 census, John Harris was in Powhatan County, VA.[8]

He was a member of the "Committee of Safety," and lived his entire life in Powhatan.[9]

Col John Harris died on 19 November 1800 and was buried in Powhatan, Powhatan County, Virginia.[10]

Col John Harris was in a family history document regarding his death on 19 November 1800 in Powhatan. The item disusses his birth and his marriage to Obediance Turpin on 24 AUG 1754 (who was born in Goochland County, Virginia and was a daughter of Thomas Turpin (d 1790) and Mary Jefferson (the aunt of President Thomas Jefferson)).[11]

John was in a family history on 11 April 1921 in Powhatan, Virginia relative to a SAR application.[12]

Harris-56258 and Harris-4944 appear to represent the same person because: dates are close - looks like duplicate profiles for wife & daughter Mary too

Harris-36814 and Harris-4944 appear to represent the same person because: not sure the locations match (son John married a woman whose family lived in Chesterfield Virginia), but dates/wife's name does. Please see bio for Harris-36814 for details and also his son's profile (Harris-29603) for links to sources for them.
