Biography

Susan Harris was born on May 8, 1828, to William Washington Harris and Nancy Anne Harper. She was the second daughter and the third child of the marriage. There may have been eight children in the family. Her father, William Washington Harris, operated a cotton gin and in 1847, he was convicted of murder in a dispute concerning the theft of cotton seeds. He was hanged on April 16, 1847, in Coweta County, Georgia.

Susan married Thomas Moses Kelley on July 4, 1847, in Coweta County, Georgia. Their first daughter, Elizabeth Ann Kelley, was born April 16,1848. She is my 2nd great-grandmother. William and Susan had eight children over a 20-year period, 4 boys and five girls. Susan’s mother, Nancy Anne Harper, died after August 1850.

On the 1860 U.S. Federal Census for Carrol County, Georgia, there are 5 children listed: Elizabeth Anne, Lucy J., Amanda, Eugenia, and Julia. Three other children are listed on the 1870 U.S. Federal Census: Thomas, Jackson, and Byrd. Susan’s brothers, John H. Harris died at Manassas on August 30, 1862, and David Samuel Harris, died at Richmond, Virginia, on October 30, 1864, from wounds sustained in battle.

Susan’s youngest daughter was born June 1, 1872. Susan would see another brother, Joseph W. Harris die on September 8, 1888. Susan died April 20, 1905, in Carroll County, Georgia and is buried at Jordon Memorial Cemetery in Carrollton, Georgia. Susan is an exception in my family history, because her husband out lived her. Thomas Moses Kelley died on January 31, 1911 in Carrollton, Georgia and is also buried in Jordan cemetery in Carrollton, Georgia.
