Thomas Brocas Harris died in West Scottsdale 120 years ago today. Born in England, he initially trained in medicine then switched to join the Wesleyan ministry, travelling to the colonies in 1846 with his wife (who gave birth to their second child on the voyage). He came to Scott's New Country in 1862 when he was 44 years old and became one of the most important men in the region, providing both spiritual and medical services at all times of the day and night when roads, if they existed, were dangerous and difficult to travel. The family, which ended up with 10 children (though two died young), lived at their property they called 'Retreat' on West Minstone Road. The Rev. Harris died aged 82 after 38 years of service to the Dorset region - his wife Ruth had died eight years previously. It is important that we do not forget these good people.
