Biography

Harrison was born about 1725 in Virginia, and provided patriotic service, by furnishing supplies in the American Revolution. ^[1]

The following account is excerpted from William E. Railey's History of Woodford County, Kentucky: ^[2]

"Harrison Harris, a Revolutionary soldier of Virginia, emigrated from Goochland County (Virginia) about 1786, and settled on 1,500 acres of land adjoining and partially surrounding Mt. Vernon Church, in Woodford County, Kentucky. This land was on both sides of Elkhorn Creek, and his home was located where Monette Wigglesworth now (1921) lives, known as the Utterback place. He and his wife, with several of their family descendants, are buried in the family graveyard at that place."

John H. Harris's father, Nathaniel, was left 200 acres of land located in the northwest corner of the 1500 acre tract. After the death of Harrison's wife Martha, her estate was then to go primarily to go to two of Nathaniel's brothers, David and Randolph.

In 1748 Harrison Harris was owner of 400 acres in Amelia County. Between that time and the 1780s, Harrison held title to acreages in Louisa County, Prince Edward County, and Goochland County in Virginia.

His wife's name is not recorded in the History of Woodford County, but his descendants and his will, recorded in Versailles in August 1795, were:^[3]

• Susanna, m. George Calhoun Caldwell (cousin of SC statesman John C. Calhoun) ^[4]

Railey does not mention Harrison's wife's name, but he opines that Harrison Harris may have had a family connection to the Mourning Harris who was mother to Capt. Jack Jouett, the "Paul Revere of the South," and grandmother to Matthew Harris Jouett, the famous painter.
