Biography

Robert Harris was christened on 5 Jul 1776 at Charlbury, Oxford, England[1]

Research Notes

I think it is questionable to use, without explanation, a baptism at Charlbury in Oxfordshire as a source for a birth said to have happened at Whichford in Warwickshire. There may be a good reason why the attached record is a source, of course.

While there does seem to be a person named Robert Harris buried at Banbury in 1862, that person's death seems to have been registered in Chipping Norton registration district, and he probably died there. (In fact, he certainly died there, on 10 April 1862). [2]

The Robert Harris living in 1851 and 1861 may well be Robert Harris who died in 1862. That seems to be the source of the birth place.

I think that what really identified this Robert Harris is that he was, with his wife Elizabeth, the father of a number of children born at Banbury in the 1790s, 1800s, and 1810s, and baptised in the Independent church there.

That Robert Harris appears to be the one living at Calthorpe Terrace in 1841, who was of independent means. That is consistent with his description as "gentleman", when his daughter Elizabeth married in 1844. It's possible that the same man was described as a "retired shoemaker" at Chipping Norton in 1851 or a "retired bootmaker" in 1861, but once again, it deserves explanation.

It is to be hoped that people use caution in adding facts, links, or sources to this profile, and treat with caution things already attached.

Just to show how tricky things can be, as well as the 86 year old who died at Chipping Norton and was buried at Banbury, the death of another Robert Harris, also 86 years old, was registered in Chipping Norton registration district in the following quarter. (He was buried at Charlbury.)

Some evidence about a Robert Harris in the boot and shoe trade in Banbury: an advertisement placed in the Banbury Advertiser on 18 March 1858 offering to let a houses and premises at 5 Church Lane in Banbury, occupied by Mr. Robert Harris, "where an extensive business has been carried on in the boot and shoe trade for many years". The death on 10th April 1862 in Chipping Norton was for a Robert Harris, gentleman and his will was proved in Oxford on 9 August 1862 by Robert Harris of Banbury (gentleman) his son, and Thomas Williams of Chipping Norton (grocer), the executors[4].
