Biography

Thomas Harrison was born about 1530, most likely in Yorkshire, England. His ancestors are not certain.[1][2][3]

Thomas was an innholder[1][2][3] and Lord Mayor of York City in 1575[1][2][3][4] and 1592.[1][2][3][5]

He married Johan Unknown, surname unknown.[1][2][3]

Thomas and Johan had five children:[1][2][3]

  1. Thomas Harrison the son and heir- established the Harrison line of Caton in Yorkshire
  2. John Harrison established the Harrison line of Acaster in Yorkshire
  3. Robert Harrison established the Harrison line of Allerthorpe in Yorkshire
  4. Mary Harrison married Thomas Herbert in 1579
  5. Frances Harrison married William Robinson

Thomas' wife, Johan, died in 1595 and was buried on 6 October 1595 at St Martin's Micklegate, York, Yorkshire.[1][2][3]

In 1604, plague swept through York with devastating effect.

In this year, the great pestilence, which began in London in 1603 and carried off 30,578 persons, spreading to the rest of the kingdom, caused 3.512 deaths in York. The markets were stopped: the lord president's courts adjourned to Ripon and Durham: many citizens left their houses. The infected were sent to Hob moor and Horse-fair where wooden booths were erected for them. The minster and minster-yard were closed.-DRAKE[6]

Thomas Harrison's will was dated 22 December 1603[1][2][3] and proved on 28 January 1604/05 at York.[1][2][3][7].

Thomas died in January 1604/5 in Yorkshire. He was buried on 13 January 1604 in St Martin's Micklegate, York.[1][2][3][8]

Research Notes

  • He was not born on 3 April 1549, nor was he born at Acaster Selby. His parents and birth date/place are unknown, but it is most likely that he was born in Yorkshire.Cody-939 02:17, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
  • The Find A Grave profile Find A Grave: Memorial #177672964 that appears to relate to this profile is incorrect: he was not born on 3 April 1549, he was not born at Acaster Selby, he did not die on 15 January 1605 in Knaresborough as he was buried on 13 January 1604 (supported by Bulmer's parish registers and Dugdale's pedigrees); he also did not have a son named Cuthbert. Find A Grave is an unreliable source for pre-1700 profiles and it does not have any sources attached to it.Cody-939 02:17, 2 May 2022 (UTC)
  • Bulmer's The Parish Registers of St. Martin-cum-Gregory : in the City of York on page 36 states that the year of 1605 started on 25 March 1605 and is after the burial record of Thomas Harrison, which supports him being buried in 1604:Cody-939 03:56, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

I believe this is the same Thomas Harrison, born after 1551. I don't show where he was from, but his ancestors are from Yorkshire.

My Thomas was the son of Thomas Harrison (1529-1593) and Jane Kellett (1533-1593) and sibling of John, Mary, Robert, and William. Grandfather also a Thomas Harrison (1504-1594) from North Riding, Yorkshire. Grandmother was Elizabeth Sytherhurst (b. about 1508) from Tenterden, Kent, England. I don't have any proof, but maybe this will help you.

I found the Thomas Harrison that you mention has a profile on WikiTree: Thomas Harrison married Jane Kellett. I can see that another member has been working on trying to establish whether there is a Yorkshire connection with that line and cannot find any sources to support it (there are Research Notes attached to some of the connected profiles). I looked at Ancestry trees (there are hundreds, and they don't agree with each other due to poor/absent sources) and could not find a credible source. I also searched various publications such as Visitations and Wills and Inventories. The Thomas Harrison of this profile could not have been born after 1551 as two of his children, John and Mary, married in 1579.

I have 'some' information on this branch of the Harrison's. They are connected to my wife's family and not to my mother's side. I am looking for connections to the Harrison's from Blackburn, Lancashire, England.

Hi Dave

Please feel free to add any information that you might have to these Harrison profiles or you can send the information to me to work on if you like. I don't have any information about Harrisons from Blackburn but I'll let you know if I come across something.
