John was born in 1856[1] in Laxton, Yorkshire, England, where he lived on Front Street with his parents, Woodall Harrison and Harriet Wainman, in 1861.[2]
At the time of the 1871 census, John worked as a servant to the Jipson family in Yokefleet, Yorkshire.[3]
John had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth,[4] with Annie Scott in 1880 and the couple married later that year.[5] In 1881 the family lived on Main Street, Eastrington, Yorkshire. John was an agricultural labourer.[6] They had moved to Station Road by 1891,[7] and Portington Road by 1901.[8][9]
John married Esther Spavin in 1918.[10] In 1921 the couple lived in Eastrington. John worked as a dyke drainer for the Bishopsoil commissioners.[11]
