Biography

Mary Frances Monyhun --- Mary Frances Harrison, daughter of Daniel B and Sarah Ann Harrison, was born in Palmyra, Missouri, June 11, 1864, and departed this life at Wellington, Kansas, September 1, 1954, at the age of 90 years, 2 months and 20 days. When Mary Frances was 12 years of age her parents and other members of the family left Missouri and came to Kansas where she grew to womanhood, and August 29, 1883 was united in marriage with George W. Monyhun at Argonia, Kansas. To their union the following children were born: Lucy, Ira, Ora, Jessie, Sylvia, Frances, George and Anabell, all of whom survive their mother save Lucy, Ora, Jessie and Sylvia. Mr. and Mrs. Monyhun and children continued to make their home in Kansas until 1897, when they came to Oklahoma to make their home on the southwest quarter of section 19, township 26, range 10, W. I. M., one mile east and three south of Cherokee. They lived on the farm until 1901 and then moved into Cherokee where they established a meat market and which they operated until the time of retirement. Mrs. Monyhun was a charter member or The Helping Hand Club organized in this community in October 1933. The club has been one that has definitely lived up to its appellation “The Helping Hand". Its service has been to others. Many have the baskets of food and clothing given to the needy at Christmas time and any other occasions when help could be rendered. Only six of the charter members remain. They are: Mrs. W. I. Arganbright, Mrs. Claude Klick, Mrs. Lou Jay, Mrs. Anna Brown, Mrs. Susie Zimmerman and Mrs. Esther Jones. Mr. Monyhun departed this life 1933 and Mrs. Monyhun continued to make her home in Cherokee until 1950, when due to failing health she went to Wellington, Kansas, to make her home. Mrs. Monyhun became a Christian early in life and was for many years affiliated with the Friends church. Later she united with the Methodist church where her membership remained until her departure from this life. “Mother Monyhun” as she was affectionately known by multitudes of friends both old and young, was a typical mother whose way of life and godliness was a challenge to all who new her. In her absence these friends will convey their sympathies to ail immediate relatives. Surviving are: her children: Mrs. A. B. Newlin, Cherokee, Mrs. J. I. McCraken, Wellington, Kansas, Mrs. Anabell Irey, Los Angeles. Calif,; Ira L. Monyhun, San Francisco, Calif.; one brother, Ira L. Harrison, Salinas, Calif. There are 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. With these are other relatives and many friends.[1]
