Mary Harrison was born 15 April 1771 at St. Clement, Eastcheap, London, England the daughter of John and Elizabeth Harrison [1].
She was transported to New South Wales, Australia on the ship "Surprize", sailing from England on 2 May 1794 and arriving at Sydney Cove on 25 October, 1794[2][3]. Her mother Elizabeth travelled on the same ship as Mary and was recorded as 49 years old, born in Nottinghamshire and a widow.
Thomas Crump and Mary Harrison met on the journey and were married on 12 March 1797 at St. Philips Church of England, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia [4][5] [6]and they had two sons, Thomas Jr Crumpton and Isaac Crump.
Little else is known of Mary Harrison after the 1806 muster where she appears as living alone with two children, until 1810 and nothing further is known of her youngest son, Isaac Crump. There is no Death recorded for Isaac in Australia and as he would have been in his 11th year in 1810 it is very likely that he was still living with his mother, or had died, as his father was still in servitude at Coal River and in a relationship with Mary Johnson at that time.
Then Mary appears as marrying again on 31 March 1810.
She married a Thomas Barton at St Philip's Anglican Church, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia [7][8]. In the Biographical Database of Australia there is the following report, dated March 1810 Thomas Barton, Widower, Abode: Sydney (NSW AUS), Tailor, Signed; & Mary Crump, Widow, Abode: Sydney (NSW AUS), Signed X; married 31 Mar 1810, registered St Philips Church of England Sydney (NSW AUS) by Licence by William Cowper, Assistant Chaplain; Witness: James Wild, Signed; Witness: Jane Pick, Signed X; Additional Information: At 10 A.M [Biog Item No. 300030557] Source: St Philip's Church of England, Sydney NSW: Church Register - Marriages; ML ref: Reel SAG 90..
There is also mention of Thomas Barton and Mary Crump on a list of marriages in 1810 of Port Jackson Convicts: AUS-PT-JACKSON-CONVICTS-L Port Jackson Convicts' Marriages For The Year 1810. On the Barton Historical Society Barton Database. Thomas and Mary are both recorded as widowed and married 31 March 1810. Mary was not a Widow but she would have found it easier to call herself one as she and Thomas Crump had not been together for about ten years.
Thomas was a Tailor, who was tried in September 1794 at County Cork, Ireland and received a Life Sentence. He arrived at at Sydney Cove aboard the "Marquis Cornwallis" on 11 Feb 1796 [9].
It has been determined that her previous husband, Thomas Crump, was still alive on 9 February 1841 when he was admitted to the Sydney Gaol

Mary and Thomas returned to England, leaving on 7 May 1810 aboard the "Dromedary" as there was advertised on 24 March 1810, that anyone being owed anything by The following Persons being about to depart the Colony, all Claims or Demands on any of the said Persons are requested respectively to be presented to themselves for Payment; Viz.— In the Dromedary, Thomas Barton, Mary Crump,[10].
There is an article on Page 2 of the The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, on Saturday, 12 May 1810, that reports that the "Dromedary" left harbour on Monday, 7 May 1810.
On Monday morning last a salute of 19 guns was fired from the battery at Dawe's Point, on His Majesty's ship Hindostan, bearing Commodore Bligh's broad pendant, getting under weigh to drop down to the Heads, from whence she this day sailed for England with the Porpoise and Dromedary.[11][12].
No further record can be located for Mary after supposedly leaving for England in May 1810. There needs to be research of British files for evidence of Mary living/dying in England post 1810, possibly under the name of Barton, Harrison or Crump.
