Biography

Born in Massachusetts but spent most of his life in Pembroke, New York. Married twice and the father of seventeen children. He went west in the early 1850’s to Kane Co., Illinois, where Horace, his youngest son from his first marriage, had settled, but died not long after.

Samuel was first married to Eunice (or Emma Eunice) Colby on June 10th, 1803, with whom he had nine children (see photo*). Eunice, born 23 Dec 1783, died 21 Aug 1821.

He married next to Martha Taft on May 11th, 1822, with whom he had eight more children (see photo*). Martha, born 27 Sept 1805, died on 2 Mar 1843 and is buried in the same cemetery as Samuel’s mother & his sister Elizabeth “Betsy” Harroun. ——————————

  • Photos are from “The History of the Harroun Family in America: seven generations; descendants of Alexander Harroun of Colrain, Mass., 1691-1784” compiled by Ernest Bernard Comstock (published in 1879)

—————————— The Harroun plot has four graves: our Samuel, granddaughter Adelia & grandson Horace W (children of son Horace) and an Abigail Harroun, for whom no details are found. Was this Abigail another of Horace’s children? Or had Samuel married for a third time?? (He was widowed & living with son Charles at the time of the 1850 Pembroke census).
