George Hartas was baptized 8 October 1826 at Kirkdale, Yorkshire. ^[1]

He had been born at at Norton-on-Derwent, Yorkshire, ^[2] which is near the market town of Malton. He was the fifth son of Richard Hartas. ^[3]

In 1854 at age 26, he married Margaret Rodham, at Gilling St. Agatha, Richmond, Yorkshire. ^{[4] [5]} After the birth of their first child, the couple went to live in Durham. ^[2]

In 1877 Mr & Mrs Hartas and family came to Australia aboard the Pericles, and went straight to Orange to live. He leaves a wife, 5 sons & 2 daughters ^[3]

Research Notes

The newspaper obituary gives a birth date of 7 Sep 1827, which is not possible according to the christening of 8 Oct 1826. A likely explanation would be that 7 Sep 1826 was the birth date, and his age was off by a year when computing his birth date for the obituary.
