James Luther Hartberger was born 25 August 1928 in Bedford County, Virginia, USA. He was the son of William Jefferson Hartberger and Lula Belle Mathews. His older siblings were:

Ms Chittum was born in Virginia, white, single, high school graduate, resided in Vinton, Roanoke County, Virginia, and the daughter of O'dell K and Lois Clark Chittum. In the late 1970s, his son Randy Neil Hartberger (20s) married B J Shell (<21) in Bedford County. Mr Hartberger was born in Virginia, white, single, high school graduate, resided on Route #1 Box 167 in Blue Ridge, and the son of James L and Nellie Giles Hartberger. Ms Shell was born in Virginia, white, single, finished 11th grade, resided in Roanoke, Roanoke City, Virginia, and the daughter of Maynard G and Lucille Ferguson Shell. They were married by Elmer Sellers, pastor of the Baptist church. ^[6]

In the late 1970s, his son M A Hartberger (<21) married T L Chandler (<21) in Bedford County. Mr Hartberger was born in Virginia, white, single, high school graduate, resided on Route #1 Box 167 in Blue Ridge, and the son of James L and Nellie Giles Hartberger. Ms Chandler was born in Virginia, white, single, high school graduate, resided in Goodview, Bedford County, and the daughter of Lewis R and Cecelia Chisom Chandler. They were married by Elmer Sellers, pastor of the Baptist church. ^[8]

On 26 June 2017, James Luther Hartberger (88) died. He was buried at Shady Grove Baptist Church. His obituary is available on his Find A Grave memorial and survivors included his two sons, three grandsons, granddaughter, and three great-grandchildren. ^[30]
