James' father died in 1842 at 42 years of age (I suspect that it could have been a farm accident). Nancy Keener's mother died sometime during the following ten years. About 1855 James' mother married Nancy's father. James was 25 at the time, and Nancy was 17. It is unknown how long they knew each other before their parents married, but they certainly had the opportunity to know each other afterwards, and during the next three years their "acquaintance" grew, until they decided to marry in 1858.
