His death followed a one-week serious illness from a complication of diseases. A resident of St. Petersburg for the past three years, he had been in failing health for the past several months.
He was born at the old Harter homestead, one mile north of Bartonia, on June 15, 1862, the son of Solomon J. and Martha Margaret Fisher-Harter. He received his education in the old No. 9 Wayne township school and later had his seminary training at Lebanon and Ridgeville.
Rev. Harter had been active in the ministry for nearly forty years, having served his first charge at Ridgeville in 1891. His other pastorates included churches in the following Indiana towns: Trenton, Kennard, Philadelphia, Williamsburg, Ridgeville for a second time, Poneto, Mentone, Windfall, Russelville, Waterloo, Van Buren, Rigden, and Gaston. Rev. Harter ended his ministry at the Farmland church in 1930.

Rev. Harter was first married to Rose Huffman, who passed away in 1887. In 1902 he was married to Minnie M. Jones, and with her death in 1928, he was united in marriage to Gurnsey Stephenson in 1929.
Besides the wife, he leaves one step-son, Cletus Stephenson, Portland Ore.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Richard Sloniker, Hood River, Ore.; one grandson, Lawrence Harter, of Union City, and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Earl Harter, also of Union City. A son, Earl, daughter Myrtle and three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Upon arrival in Union City the body will be taken to Fraze funeral home where friends may call after 12 o'clock noon Monday.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p. m. at the Union City Methodist church, of which he was a member. Officiating will be three ministers, Rev. E. E. Kaufman, Rev. E. J. Wickersham, of Richmond, the district superintendent, and Rev. H. H. Short, of Hagerstown. Interment will be made in Union City cemetery.
Preceding the services the body will lie in state at the church from 1 to 2 p. m.[1]

Early Modoc Minister Preached With A Loaded Revolver Near:
Many young men took to carrying guns for their own protection. Rev. Solomon Fremont Harter of the Methodist church in 1886 preached in Modoc with a loaded revolver lying on the rostrum in front of him, according to several of the older residents.
Rev. Harter was a big man. On many occasions, it is said, he interrupted his services to herd a group of trouble makers to the door, where he gently but firmly pitched them out. Eventually his firmness and popularity put a stop to church disturbances.
