John was born in Threshfield, Yorkshire, England around 1848. In 1851 he resided in Linton in Craven, Yorkshire. In 1871, he resided at Halifax, Yorkshire, employed as a carpenter. In 1876, he emigrated with his wife and children to New Zealand on the ship Countess of Kintore, sailing on 2 February and arriving on 19 April at Lyttelton. He lived in Christchurch, apparently having further children before separating from his wife in the the 1880s. He passed away in Ashburton in 1927 aged 79.
