As Philip was baptised at Overton on 1st March 1729/30,[1] he must have been born on or before that date. He is the son of Philip Hartley and Elizabeth Walker. At the time of his christening, his father was a roper and the family was living at Sunderland, a small village in the city of Lancaster, Lancashire, England.[2]
Philip Hartley married Ann Brocklebank on 14 Dec 1752 in Whitbeck, Cumberland, England.[3] [Whitbeck is a parish in Bootle]
His children included:
Mary Hartley, christened 11 Mar 1752 in Whitbeck[4]
Isaac Hartley, christened 13 Mar 1757 in Whitbeck[5] and married Mary Benn in Whitbeck on 7 Apr 1782.[6] He was a witness to his sister Ann’s marriage to Henry Steel.
Betty Hartley, christened 3 May 1760 in Whitbeck[7]
