William Henry Hartman was born 13 Apr 1807 to John and Mary Polly Hartman. At this time his parents were living in Pendleton Co, VA (now WV).
In 1830 William was 23-years-old. He is seen on the 1830 census with other family members.

Marriage
William grew up in Pendleton Co, VA (now WV) where he met and married his wife, Catherine Lair Miller. William Hartman and Catherine Miller were married on 28 Feb 1832, in Pendleton Co, VA (now WV).

Property
In 1833 William Hartman purchased 119 acres of land from his father-in-law Isaac Miller.
[3] A year later, in 1834 William and Catherine Hartman sell their property back to Isaac Miller.

1835 William Hartman and father-in-law Isaac Miller are giving a refund for a bond on Ferdinand Lair's estate.

Ohio
By 1840 William Hartman and his wife have moved to Eagle Township, Hancock Co, OH. This census shows 2 children, there should be 3.[6] There is a James Hartman listed on the same page, and a Joshua Hartman listed on the page before William. Are these his cousins?
William leases property in Hardin Co, OH from John Schall of Pennsylvania. The lease is for 10 years, starting on the 1st of Sept 1848. Per the contract William is to clear the 30 acres, put in orchards and fencing.

In 1849 William Hartman is found on tax records in Hardin Co, OH. He paid all of his taxes except 67.2 cents.

1850 Census - In 1850 William Hartman is recorded on the census in Pleasant Township, Hardin Co, OH.

In 1850 William is also found in the Hardin county tax records. He owed $.84.3 cents.

Gold
In the spring of 1857 William and Wesley Hartman go with a group of people to the gold fields in Colorado. Finding nothing there they go on to the gold fields of California. They are with the Corbin family, Benjamin, Barton and Sarah. They stay about 3 years and then all return to Iowa.[11]
Iowa
1860 Census - Between 1850 and 1860 William and his family moved to Webster Co, IA. They are found in Washington township, Webster Co, IA in 1860. Children John (the younger), Jacob, Sarah, Emma and Caroline are still at home.

1870 Census - In 1870 William and Catherine are still in Webster Co, IA. One son and one daughter are still at home.

1880 Census - By 1880 William is 73-years-old. He and Catherine have one child in their home. His name is Delbert Edwards, he is 2. This is probably the child of their daughter Emma Edwards who died in 1880. She is buried in the same cemetery her father will be buried at in 8 years.

Death
William Hartman passed away on 19 Dec 1884. He is buried in Webster Co, IA.[15]

William Hartman leased from John Schall of the state of Pennsylvania, 30 acres of land in the east corner of Schall's land, near Kenton, Hardin County Ohio, bound by the south section line, east by Blanchard Road, lease for 10 years commencing the first day of September 1848, in consideration of the use of the said 30 acres William Hartman will clear the land make and smooth and put out an orchard within the first year of 50 apple trees at the expenditure of said, five fields with good fence of eight rails high, and put up such buildings as he thinks proper, and have no right to the said Schall's land outside the lease unless there should not be sufficient timber for fencing. Said Hartman is to sell no timber but use that which is for rails or for buildings. Half of the 30 acres is to be cleared in 5 years from the date of this article or forfits his lease and said 30 acres at the expiration of said 10 years. Signed by David Kinnear, atty for John Schall, and William Hartman. Recorded Sept 30, 1854.

Webster County Iowa Genweb Cemeteries, Hartman Cemetery : Section 10, 7 miles S of Duncombe, or 2 miles W, 1/4 S of Homer, West of Road. Located in pasture on hilltop. It has 8 markers although there are 14 graves just west of the creek. Jacob Hartman, Col. H. 44th Indiana Infantry, and his wife, Ceb. were buried here with relatives, except two children who were not related.

Gives information about William Hartman's death date. However the transcriber said his tombstone says he is son of Jacob, but that can't be, he was born before Jacob Hartman!
