Biography

Private John Hartman served in the United States Civil War.

John Jehu Jehn Hartman was born in Pendleton Co, VA (now WV). Family oral history has told this researcher his middle name was Jehn. However, on some documents his middle name is written as Jehu. So both names are placed here. John J. Hartman is the son of William Hartman and Catherine Miller Hartman as shown on the 1850 census.[1]

Marriage

John Jehu and Esther Sarah Needham[2], daughter of John Needham and Rosanna Pattison Needham, married in Hardin Co, OH on 23 Sept 1854.[3] [4] To this union are born 4 sons, Otis, William, Wesley, and John John Hartman.

Census

1840 Census - As a young child John moved with his parents to Ohio and this is where he was raised to maturity. John Hartman's father, William, is listed on the census in Eagle township, Hancock Co, OH in 1840. John was just about 6 or 7-years-old at that time.[5]

1850 Census - John is found with his parents on the 1850 census in Pleasant township, Hardin Co, OH.[1] On this census John is 17-years-old and he has attended school during this year. This is also where John meets his future wife.

1860 Census - Just before the 1860 census John and his family move to Iowa as noted by his children's births on the census.[6]

Civil War

The Civil War muster roll records show that John was in the 32d Iowa Inf, Co A. He is listed as John I. Hartman, age 30, residence Hamilton Co (Iowa), nativity Virginia, enlisted 13 Aug 1862, Mustered in 6 Sept 1862. [7]

Death

Two months after John entered the military he got very ill in camp. His job was guard duty when he got ill. He succumbed to his illness and died November 12th at camp in Dubuque, IA.[8][2] Left with 4 little children, John's wife, Esther, applied for a pension after John's death.[9]In the pension paperwork the surgeon noted that J. J. Hartman died at Camp Franklin, Dubuque, Iowa on the 12th of November 1862 and died of congestion of the brain... he was a healthy man when he entered the service.... J.B. Olney M.D., Physician & Surgeon, Late Surg. 32nd Iowa Vols. [10] The pension paperwork gives the names and birthdates of this four children. Otis E. Aug 6, 1855, William L. June 19, 1858, Wesley M. May 18, 1860, and John J. April 11, 1862.[11]
