Biography

Wilson was born May, 1840 in Champaign, Illinois. He died at his home near Monmouth, Crawford county, Kansas.
Modern Light, a newspaper in Columbus, Kansas, on 11 Oct 1900 wrote about him:
Wilson Hartman is a staunch old farmer and has a fine farm of 160 acres most of which is rented out. They have six children, two daughters are yet at home. He has been here for 35 years and can tell you all about the hardships of frontier life. In politics he is a republican, but yet thinks the Modern Light is all right and has been a constant reader since its first issue. His farm is an example of what can be accomplished in a life time. We failed to learn from where he came to Kansas.

C. W. Hartman and brother Wilson Hartman, Jr., live on this 160 acres. Lightning creek, often like the republicans, believes in expansion by force and often visits the surrounding country and lays waste about 60 acres of this farm. They have been here for eight years; were born in Kansas, and while republicans are readers of the Modern Light since Mr. Lowry was through here three years ago. These boys are up early and late and the amount of property about them shows it pays to be up and going.
