MR. GUSTAV HARTMANN
The passing of Mr. Gustav Hartmann, of Dundee, on March 30, removed from our midst a very, well-known and respected member of the community. The late Mr. Hartmann was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1859 and at four years of age came to Australia with his parents and grand-parents. The Hartmanns landed in Sydney and from there came, north to Gunnedah. It was in the Gunnedah district that the deceased gentleman went to school, but this terminated when he was 14 years of age, his parents coming to New England. A selection was made at Dundee, and as the years have rolled by the name of Hartmann has become more and more firmly rooted in that centre.
For many years the late Mr. Hartmann worked on his father's property gaining widespread experience. When he was 32 years of age he married Miss Emma Kiehne and shortly afterwards selected for himself. During his association with his father's property he had become very, conversant with the growing of wool, and it was not to be wondered that his efforts on his own behalf bore success.
During life the late Mr. Hartmann worked hard for the progress of Dundee, and associated himself with every movement in that centre. He was a committeeman on the Jockey Club and evinced a keen interest in cricket and tennis. Of the former club he was one of the foundation members and during his tennis career there were about seven clubs composed of enthusiastic players from Dundee. The prowess of the Dundee cricket and tennis team of that day will long be remembered as they made sporting history in this locality.
