William was born in 1824 in Turvey, Bedfordshire, England. He was the son of William Hartwell and Jane (Goodman) Hartwell.^[1]

When William was about 24 he married Hephzibah Gibbs on 6 January 1848 in Turvey, Bedfordshire, England.
