Hartwells of America 6.210 NATHAN HARTWELL was born in Easton, Massachusetts (recorded Bridgewater) 11 October 1765 (BVR 1:133) and died in Sandusky, Ohio ca. 1822 (Pension File W3803).

He married in Plympton, Massachusetts 7 November 1789, SALLY RIPLEY (PVR 329), who was born there 5 June 1771 (PVR 170) and died, probably in Paris, Union County, Ohio, sometime after 15 April 1843, when she applied for and received a widow’s pension (Pension File W3803; HOA has 16 July 1839), daughter of Timothy, Jr. and Hannah (Soule) Ripley.

At the age of 16, Nathan enlisted as a private in Colonel Ebenezer Sproat’s regiment of the Massachusetts line for the term of three years, at which time he was described as being 5’ 6½” tall. He was a 55-year-old resident of Licking County, Ohio when he applied for and received a pension due to this service (Pension File 18160). On 25 May 1820 he renewed the pension, stating at that time that his family consisted of his wife, Sally, age 50, “very infirm,” daughter Hannah, age 17, in health, son John, age 14, son Henry Thaxter, age 10, and daughter Rosey, age 7. He stated that he was by occupation a farmer, but by reason of age and infirmity occasioned by Rheumatism he was unable to pursue this occupation (Pension File W3803).
