Esther was born into slavery, and after marrying Lewis Hayden (1811-1889), was sold with their son away from Lewis by enslaver and US Senator Henry Clay into the Deep South. Her husband would go on to escape slavery in Kentucky and become an Underground Railroad Conductor with his second wife Harriet (Bell) Hayden (abt.1813-1893) in Massachusetts.
She may have been one of the women enumerated as enslaved by Henry Clay in 1830 at his estate in Fayette County, Kentucky. Of the 17 women and girls enslaved by him that year, six were under 10 years old, four were between 10 and 23 years old, six were between 24 and 35 years old, and one was over 55 years old.
