The article "The Harvey Family" in The North Carolina Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. III, No. 3 (July 1903), pp. 476-480 appears to disprove that claim. Their son who was named John Harvey was born ca. 1726, married Mary Bonner, daughter of Thomas and Abigail Bonner, of Beaufort Co., NC, and died in 1775. He was Speaker of the Assembly and Moderator of the Provincial Congress in New Bern, NC.
