Biography

Richard was born in 1813. He was the son of John Harvin and Rebecca Naomi Nowell. He married Sarah Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lyman. In the 1850 census [1] he is living in Sumter District, South Carolina with his father, sisters Sarah and Julia, his wife Sarah Elizabeth and daughter Alice. In the 1960 census [2] he is in the Clarendon District with his wife Elizabeth, daughter Alice (age 16), and son John (age 1).

Genealogy Notes

  • The full name of wife "Sarah Elizabeth 'Lizzie" Lyman" is a compilation from several sources. Two ancestries noted that his wife was a "Lizzie Lyman." In the 1850 census Richard was living with his father. Included in the household were a "Sarah E" and a young "Alice." It wasn't clear who they were until the 1860 census showed "Elizabeth" as wife and Alice as daughter of Richard. The ages of Elizabeth and Alice corresponded to the ages of Sarah E. and Alice 10 years earlier.
