Joseph was born about 1660 in Charles City, Virginia. He is the son of Joseph Harwood and Joyce UNKNOWN. He passed away in April 1737 in Charles City, Virginia.[1]
Among early members of the Harwood family to appear in Charles City, Virginia, were the brothers Joseph and Samuel Harwood, sons of Joseph Harwood, Sr. They married two daughters of Thomas Cocke; Joseph married Agnes Cocke and Samuel married Temperance Cocke.
In 1704 Joseph is included on the Rent Roll for Charles City County, Virgina with 659 acres of land[2].
Joseph Harwood was a Justice for Charles City County in 1705 and a burgess in 1710.[3][4][5]

p. 180: Whereas a plantation on Kittawan Creek in Charles City County, now in tenure and occupation of Andrew Meldrum, and part of said plantation now in tenure and occupation of Abraham Story doth descend and fall unto me Joseph Harwood of same parish and county of Wynoak and Charles City, as being the immediate heir of my mother Joyce Meldrum, lately dec'd, and to whom it did properly formerly belong; now I for love and affection to my brother Samuel Harwood of same parish and county, make over to him all of my said plantation. Dated 2 January 1693/4.
