Biography

Patience was born about 1807.

Marriage

Joseph Harris and Patience Harwood were married after banns at St Mary's, Cogges, Oxfordshire on 31st October 1825.[1] They were bachelor and spinster. Joseph was from Long Coombe whilst Patience was from Cogges. Neither could write so they both made their mark on the register with a cross. The witnesses to the marriage were Maria Harris, Richard Hunwell and John Turner.

Censuses

In the 1841 census, Joseph and Patience were living in Swan Street, Long Hanborough, Oxfordshire, with six children: Robert, Rosena, John, Fanny, Anthony, and Maria, aged from 14 to one year old. Joseph's occupation is listed as glover. [2]

By the 1851 census, Patience and Joseph were living at Newland in the village of Coggs, Whitney Union, Oxfordshire. Five children are living with them: John, Fanny, Anthony, Maria and Joseph, aged from 20 to 6 years old. This time, Patience is noted as being a glover, while Joseph and the older children are listed as Leather Grounders. Living next door are William Harwood and his family - perhaps a kinsman of Patience. [3]

In the 1871 and 1881 censuses, Patience is listed as a widow living on her own at Newland in the village of Coggs. Both times her occupation is noted as gloveress. In 1871, Mary A Harris (perhaps a daughter in law?), also a widow, is living next door with two children. [4]
