Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Samuel Harwood was a Virginia colonist.

Samuel was born about 1658 in Charles City County, Virginia. He is the son of Joseph Harwood and Joyce UNKNOWN. His exact death date and place are unknown, although he probably died in Charles City, Virginia.

Samuel was a Captain of a ship in 1701 and was burgess for Charles City County in 1710-1712, 1714, 1723 and 1726. In 1704 he is listed on the Rent Roll for Charles City County, Virginia with 350 acres of land.[1]

Harwood, Samuel, son of Joseph Harwood, who patented lands in Charles City county in 1665; was burgess for Charles City county in 1710-1712. He remarried Temperance Cocke, daughter of Captain Thomas Cocke Sr., of Henrico, and was father of Samuel Harwood (q. v.).[2]

Among early members of the Harwood family to appear in Charles City, Virginia, were the brothers Joseph and Samuel Harwood, sons of Joseph Harwood, Sr. They married two daughters of Thomas Cocke; Joseph married Agnes Cocke and Samuel married Temperance Cocke.[3]

Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly and Magazine of Virginia Genealogy, Fragmentary Will & Deed Book, Charles City County. Volume 17, Number 4; Oct 1979. Page 129.[4]

p. 180: Whereas a plantation on Kittawan Creek in Charles City County, now in tenure and occupation of Andrew Meldrum, and part of said plantation now in tenure and occupation of Abraham Story doth descend and fall unto me Joseph Harwood of same parish and county of Wynoak and Charles City, as being the immediate heir of my mother Joyce Meldrum, lately dec'd, and to whom it did properly formerly belong; now I for love and affection to my brother Samuel Harwood of same parish and county, make over to him all of my said plantation. Dated 2 January 1693/4.

Jonathan Ogden, Jos. Harwood
Agnes Harwood
Recorded 5 February 1693. Agnes, wife of Joseph Harwood, relinquishes her dower right.

Marriages & Children

It appears that Samuel was married twice. It has been assumed that Samuel was much younger than his brother, Joseph Harwood, Jr., due to his marriage to Temperance Cocke about 1694. However, certain evidence leads to the theory that Temperance was a second wife. Note the quote given above from Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography "He remarried Temperance Cocke. ..."

In addition, there are four members of the Harwood family appearing in either the Rent Roll for Charles City County, Virgina for 1704 [Robert, 312 acs, John, 100 acs, & James Harwood, 200 acs][1] or as signatory to a petition of landowners [Charles Harwood] together with Samuel and Joseph Harwood in 1705.[5]

It is postulated that these are the sons of Samuel Harwood who gained their majority by 1704/05 and were listed with small amounts of property on the Rent Roll. This would give the youngest of the assumed brothers a birth year about 1684 and might indicate a first marriage of Samuel about 1678.[5]

So assuming Samuel married twice, his first wife is unknown and they probably married about 1678. Possible children include:

  1. Robert Harwood
  2. James Harwood
  3. John Harwood
  4. Charles Harwood

Samuel married Temperance Cocke on 14 June 1694 in Henrico County, Virginia.[6] Known children include:

  1. Samuel Harwood, Jr., 1695

Note: William Harwood, born 1737, appears to be in the wrong family. The birth date is too long after the birth of presumed brother Samuel in 1695 and his presumed mother Temperance Cocke would have been 69 years old.

Research Notes

Following notes are from "Genealogy of the Cocke Family of Virginia" and it is unclear from the context what the relationships are:[3]

William H. Harwood of Charles City. c. 1770, married Margaret Waldrop, who had issue:

  • Agnes married Fielding Lewis, of Gloucester, 1788 and
  • Nancy married Thomas Lewis, of Gloucester...

All these Charoles City and King and Queen Harwoods were descended from Temperance and Agnes Cocke.

Issue: (mentioned in the will of their grandfather, Thomas Cocke, 1694)

  • Thomas Harwood
  • Joseph Harwood
  • Agnes Harwood
