Biography

When Cummings enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Montreal, Quebec on May 14, 1917, he was a student at Harvard University and stood 5' 8 1/2" tall, had a medium complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. [1] His regimental number was 2341385 and he became a gunner in the Siege Artillery. Cummings left Halifax for England 18 Jun 1916 and was assigned to the 10th battalion Siege Artillery in England. He served in France at the Somme and received a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and arm on Aug 26th 1918. In October 1918 he was transferred to the Princess Patricia Canadian Red Cross Hospital in Bexhill, England. He was demobilized 8 Feb 1919. [2]

John graduated from Harvard University in 1918 and then from Cornell University Law School in 1925. He was a lawyer in New York City. [3] In 1940, he lived at 321 Kimball Ave., Westfield, New Jersey and had 2 children. [4]

John died in a fishing accident. He was fishing from the Hamden Dam on the opening day of trout season. A nearby fisherman hooked a fish and when John leaned over with a landing net to help land the fish, he fell five feet into the water. Wearing heavy boots and clothing, he was not able to help himself and he was pulled out of the water too late. His son Charles Brent Haslam, 17, and Rolf Hansen, 48, narrowly escaped the same fate while attempting rescue. [5]
