William Haslam II was the son of Martha Ann Oxford and William A. Haslam I, hatmaker from Woburn, Massachusetts. He was born September 10, 1858.
After the untimely death of his father, William II took over his father’s mail responsibilities and then went back to San Francisco area later on in order to complete his education. He attended Heald’s Business College and learned bookkeeping and merchandising in order to further his career in this field. While attending school he roomed with S.E. Crow – who later became one of the leading citizens of Santa Maria. Many will remember him as Judge Crow.
By 1880 William Haslam II decided to move to Central City and in that year he was employed as a bookkeeper by James F. Goodwin after which he then purchased the business and formed his own company. But in the early 1880’s he gained valuable experience in merchandising from his employers. Growing out of the J.F. Goodwin store, emerged the W.A. Haslam Company. Mr. Haslam, upon settling in Central City and becoming a merchant, bought into the business with Mr. Goodwin and Mr. W.G. Adams, the son of the pioneer William Laird Adams, and A.F. Fugler who also had an interest in the firm at that time.
