Pvt Michael Hastings served in the United States Civil War. Enlisted: 1862 Mustered out: 1865 Side: USA Regiment(s): 1st Regiment Missouri Calvalry
Michael was born about 1800, and married in County Mayo, Ireland in 1826.[1].
Michael Hastings left County Mayo sometime prior to 1849, as he was living in Liverpool with his family at the time. He lost two daughters (Bridget[2] Hestin and Honor[3] Hestin) and had his youngest daughter, Margaret, was born there, with these three events all happening that year. He was enumerated in the 1851 census in a very unusual spelling of the surname.[4]
The family, with the exception of son Edward, who stayed behind and left English born descendants, immigrated to the USA before 1855, but they arrived separately. He and two known sons (Thomas and Peter) passage has not been identified to date.
His daughter Anna Bridget Hastings, arrived in February of that year[5] with his wife arriving in April, along with daughters Sarah and Margaret and son James (whose whereabouts past that passage has not been identified, to date, past that arrival).[6] Michael Hastings is enumerated in the 1860 census with his wife, Bridget and their youngest daughter Margaret, who had been born in England.[7] Also in the 1870 census.[8] He passed away in 1878 in Lexington, Missouri[9]. Based on approximate name and date fits: From South Mayo Family Research Centre, 25 June 1996 - comments:
Bridget "Stuart" married 8th Sept 1826 in Westport RC parish Michael "Hestin" (witnesses: Daniel Hestin and Anne Lydon). Hestin is a variant of the surname Hastings, which is closely associated with the parish of Oughaval (Westport) and, in particular, the country around Cushlough in that parish. Other spelling versions of the surname which occur include Hestin and Histon.

↑ Brown-118194 commentary: 1851 census (Liverpool, Lancashire, England, Addison No 2 Court?). I tried a neat trick in the search engine where I didn't look for the last name, but for Margaret's name, approximate birth with parents listed as Michael and Bridget...and look what I came up with (see attached).
Now if I stretch my imagination and go from the surname Esthan, as it was enumerated, to a slurred...H'eston, it sounds logical. Margaret's birth was on Oriel St. which is just a few blocks over from Addison, and Edwards marriage (as Hastings though, but that could have been about the time it was changed) was even closer at Banastre St, which is the next block to Addison.
"Name and surname of each person who abodes in house on night of 30 March 1851"
So here's what I have:
Michael expected 51 was: 50 (good) [dock laborer]
Bridget expected 41 was: 50 (well not quite as good, but considering it always[!] changed, it's OK. Using death notice she would be 49 and using 1860 census she'd be 47, so closer than my "averaging" that lead to "expected" of 41)
Edward expected 20 was: 21 (good) [dock laborer]
Anna expected 14 was: Ellen at 30 (seems unlikely the order would have been messed up, maybe the enumerator put 30 but 13 was said. Not sure about the name. Unless it was another daughter, but then it wouldn't fit with an 1826 marriage year, most she could be is 25.)
James expected 15 was: 14 (Good) [at home]
Thomas expected 13 was: 10 (given that we don't have as good a date on him maybe OK) [shop boy at 10 years old?, yet his brother James, at 15 is at home?]
Sarah expected 8 was: 8 (good) [at home]
Peter expected 6 was: 12 (I never even had Peter in the same household up to this point, but this was inferred so OK? est: 1839) [scholar]
Margaret expected 2 was: 2 (good) [all rest Ireland except her at Liverpool, Lancas]

↑ Old Michael Hastings, the blind man, who for a number of years was almost entirely supported by the charity of our citizens, and who died last fall, upon his death-bed requested his wife to return his sincere thanks, through the papers, to those charitable persons who so long kept him from suffering. Almost with his last breath he prayed that heaven's richest blessings might follow them through life.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Michael by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Michael:
It seems unlikely that Michael Hastings had Civil War service. He would have been 61 years old at the start of the war (and blind by the 1870 census, and noted in his obit). His son, Thomas Hastings definitely was in the Union Army, as well as his brother-in-law, Patrick Stewart, and nephews, Charles Stewart and Mark Stewart.
I'd like to remove the reference to the Civil War service but there's not enough detail in the referenced record to say with certainty one way or another.
