Biography

Thomas Hastings was born about 1799-1801 in Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, Scotland, according to the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Scotland census.^[1][2][3]

His parents are not known (see Research Notes below).

Thomas Hastings married Elisabeth Howat on 27 May 1831 in Old Cumnock, Ayrshire, Scotland.^[4]

In 1841, Thomas Hastings (40) was living in Morton, Dumfriesshire, with wife Elisabeth Hastings (40), and children James (9), John (7), Elisabeth (4) and Isabella (0).^[1]

In 1851, Thomas Heastings (51) was living in Dumfriesshire, with wife Elizabeth Heastings (51), and children James (19), John (17), Elizabeth (14), Isabella (10) and Mary H (8), and boarder James Lancaster (20). The children were born in Ayrshire.^[2]

In 1861, Thomas Hastings (62) was living in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, with wife Elizabeth H Hastings (61) and children Elizabeth H (24), Isabella (20) and Mary C (18), and with boarders John Webster (23), Robert Adamson (26) and William Watson (24). He worked as a foundry labourer.^[3]

Research Notes

This Thomas Hastings is listed in some family trees as the same as Thomas Boyes Hairstones, born 30 Aug 1797 in Morton by Thornhill, Dumfriesshire, to James Hairstones and Elizabeth Boyes. However other than general similarity in spelling, and similarity in time and place, these are different names and it is not clear that they are the same person. There is a plausible different family for that Thomas Hairstones.
