Biography

Godfrey C Hastings was born November 7, 1834 (FAG Memorial states birth date is Dec 1835) in Pickering Township, York, Ontario, Canada. He was the 3rd born son of 7 children born to Reuben W Hastings & Mary Francis Wickham. He worked as a farmer, miller and laborer during various stages of his life. Godfrey died August 28, 1887 in Jackson, Jackson, Michigan, USA. Godfrey was a resident of the Michigan Soldiers Home when he died (Cause of Death: Consumption).

Arrival in America 1837 - 1840 (Age: 3): Before June 1, 1840, Reuben moved the family to Carlton, Orleans, New York, USA. The family came to Orleans County most likely by crossing Lake Ontario by boat.

Residence June 1, 1850 (Age: 15): in Carlton, Orleans, New York, USA. This US census shows him living with his parents and 3 siblings while attending school.

Residence June 13, 1855 (Age: 20): in Carlton, Orleans, New York, USA. This New York State census shows him living with parents and 4 siblings; listed as Single, Occupation: Farmer.

Residence June 1, 1860 (Age: 25): in Carlton, Orleans, New York, USA. This US census shows Post Office: Murray; Farmer; Value of personal estate $30; Living with Eveline Hastings, age 16, born in New York. They are assumed to be married at this time (census did not ask this question).

Godfrey's 1st Marriage before June 1, 1860 (Age: 25): in Orleans County New York, USA to Mrs Eveline Hastings (maiden name unknown). No documentation found for the marriage. This is based on 1860 US census dated June 14, 1860 and "New York Town Clerks' Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War ca 1861-1865" taken in 1863 which listed him as married. They had daughter Hattie Hastings born either December 1863 or December 1866 in Orleans County.

Civil War Draft Registration June 30, 1863 (Age: 28): in Orleans County, New York, USA. This was a Consolidated listing of all persons subject to do military duty in the 28th Congressional District, consisting of the Counties of Monroe and Orleans State of New York enumerated during the month of June 1863 under the direction of Provost Marshall. This listed his residence as Gaines, Orleans County; also listed him as single.

Civil War Veteran December 7, 1863 - August 15, 1865 (Age: 29): from Orleans County, New York, USA. He was a Union Soldier, Rank of Private, Served in 8th Heavy Artillery, Company A which later merged with 10th NY Infantry. Residence June 1, 1870 (Age: 35): in Ridgeway, Orleans, New York, USA. This US census lists Post Office: Knowlesville, Dwelling #706, Family #702: Living with William Lattimore and family along with 5 other boarders. Other information: Hastings, Godfrey, 32, male, white, laborer, born in Canada, father and mother of foreign descent. By this time he no longer appeared to be with his wife Eveline who appeared in the census as living in Saratoga, Saratoga, New York, USA with information listed as Age: 26, Working in a cotton mill, living with 7 year old daughter in a boarding house.

Godfrey's 2nd Marriage was between July 5, 1870 - January 1871 (Age: 35): in Orleans County, New York, USA to Selina Elizabeth Cole, born in England, the eldest daughter of 6 children born to Nathaniel Cole (1824 – 1894) & Mary Elizabeth Webber (1825 – 1912). Godfrey & Selina were married after the enumeration of the 1870 United States Census on July 5th and before birth of 1st son in September 1871. They had 5 children, 2 sons & 3 daughters. 1 daughter Eva may have been Selina's from a prior marriage per photo showing her as a half sister of John Kirk found in Ken & Ruth Hastings' belongings. No information on Eva has been located except this photo and a mention in her mother's 1936 obituary showing her married & living in Michigan.

Civil War Veteran's Pension September 29, 1877 (Age: 42): In Eaton Rapids,Michigan, his wife Selina applied for and was approved for Army Invalid pension on this date. Later In Albion, Orleans, New York his wife applied for widow pension on April 18, 1888.

Residence June 1, 1880 (Age: 45): in Eaton Rapids, Eaton, Michigan, USA. This 1880 US Census shows him living with his wife and 3 children; Occupation; Laborer.

Burial View after August 28, 1887: in Mount Evergreen Cemetery, Jackson, Jackson, Michigan, USA. Find A Grave Memorial# 112245122 shows Plot: buried in the Soldiers Cemetery. A military headstone was provided for Deceased Union Civil War Veterans.


After her husband's death, Selina returned to Orleans County and then to Niagara Falls where she died in February of 1936, having never remarried.

The following is taken from New York in the War of the Rebellion, 3rd ed. Frederick Phisterer. Albany: J. B. Lyon Company, 1912.
Mustered in as the 129th regiment of infantry: August 22, 1862
Designated 8th regiment of artillery (heavy): December 19, 1862
Mustered out: June 5, 1865
Col. Peter A. Porter received, July 7, 1862, authority to recruit a regiment in the counties of Genesee, Niagara and Orleans. This regiment was, August 28, 1862, designated the 129th Regiment of Infantry. It was organized at Lockport, and there mustered in the service of the United States for three years, August 22, 1862. It was converted into a regiment of artillery, and December 19, 1862, designated the 8th Regiment of Artillery. Two additional companies were organized at Lockport in December, 1863, and January, 1864, and mustered in the United States service for one and three years.
Three companies were recruited in the county of Genesee, three in the county of Orleans, and four in Niagara county; Company L at Bennington, Bergen, Lewiston, Pavilion, LeRoy, Oakfield, Bethany, Pembroke, Alabama, Darien, Alexandria, Batavia, Rochester, Middleburg and Stafford; and M at Warsaw, China, Rochester, Sheldon, Lima, Lockport, Avon, Java and Wethersfield.
The regiment (ten companies) left the State August 23, 1862, and served as heavy artillery and infantry at Baltimore, Md., and vicinity from August 27, 1862; at Harper's Ferry, W. Va., from July 10, 1863; at Baltimore, Md,, and vicinity from August 3, 1863, in the Middle Department, 8th Corps. Companies L and M joined in February, 1864, and the regiment served in Tyler's Division, 2d Corps, from May 17, 1864; in the 4th Brigade, 2d Division, 2d Corps, from May 29, 1864; and in the 2d Brigade, 2d Division, 2d Corps, from June 26, 1864.
June 5, 1865, Companies A to K were, under the command of Lieut-Col. Joseph W. Holmes, mustered out and honorably discharged at Munson's Hill, Va.; the men not discharged with their respective companies were transferred, those of Companies G, H, I and K to the 4th N. Y. Volunteer Artillery, and those of Companies A, B, C, D, E and F, and also Companies L and M, to the 10th N. Y. Volunteer Infantry, of which the men of Companies A, D and F formed Company K; those of B, C and E Company I; Company L became Company H and M Company G.
During its service the regiment lost by death, killed in action, 11 officers, 199 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 9 officers, 145 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 4 officers, 302enlisted men; total, 24 officers, 646 enlisted men; aggregate, 670; of whom I officer and 113 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy
