Biography

Jonathan Hatch Jr. was born on 17 May 1652 at Barnstable, Plymouth Colony. He was the son of Jonathan Hatch Sr. and Sarah (Rowley) Hatch.[1][2][3] [4]

It was stated previously, that "(H)e was chosen Captain of the military company" & the cited Otis work is used as a source.[5] However, this sources calls Jonathan "Capt." without any documentation & states that "he was chosen ensign of the military company." Jonathan Hatch "junr" being an "Ensigne" is confirmed by Plymouth Colony records, but nothing is stated about his being a "Capt."[6]

It was also stated here that "(O)n 23 Apr 1679 he witnessed the sale of land by Jacob Perkins to Joseph Hull in Barnstable", using the transcribed town records from American Ancestors.[7] However, a review of another transcription of the Barnstable town records shows that Jonathan was merely mentioned in this deed, he was not a witness.[8] This deed does not clarify if this was Sr. or Jr., but given the Sr. was an early grantee of Succonnesset & that Jr. is not specified, it's more likely to be Jonathan Sr.

Jonathan "junr", along with Jonathan Sr., were made freeman at Barnstable, the 24th of June, 1694.[9]

Jonathan Hatch "iunr" married Abigail Weeks on 4 Dec 1676 either at Barnstable or Falmouth, Plymouth Colony.[10][11] (NB that in the cited Falmouth town records, the next entry after the marriage record, Jonathan is again called Jr. (as "ir"; "i"s & "j"s in this era were used interchangeably.) in the birth record of his son, Jonathan.) There are many secondary sources which state that Jonathan & Abigail were married at Martha's Vineyard, but a primary source for that marriage location has not been posted, while there are primary sources for the locations of Barnstable & Falmouth, Plymouth Colony.[12] Abigail was the daughter of William Weeks of Martha's Vineyward.[13][14]

He died sometime after 1696, the birth-date of his last child, in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He was buried in the Old Burying Ground, in Falmouth. [5]

The reference to Otis is incorrect in stating that he gives a death date for Jonathan of 2 Oct. 1689 -- this is the date Otis gives for Hatch's selection as ensign of the militia. Capt. Jonathan Hatch, Jr., b. 17 May 1652, son of Jonathan, is shown (p. 468) with offspring born at Falmouth from 1678 (Jonathan) to 1696 (Ebenezer) and all that can be said is that Jonathan dies after the latter year. Neither Otis, nor the 1925 "Genealogy & History of the Hatch Family", offer a death date for him, and the latter specifies that while it is known he died at Falmouth, it is not known when. Removing the reference and the 1689 death date -- it's generating an error banner when I attach son Nathan/Nathaniel (b. 1693). Also, correcting the birth date from 7 Mar to 17 May.
