Biography

Walter Hatch immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Walter was baptised March 1623 at St. Dustan, Stepney, England, the son of William Hatch and Jane Young. (The date is not clearly legible but its is betwee the 25th and 28th inclusive)[1] After Walter's birth, his parents were married by license July 9, 1624,[2] (Prior to the discovery of the baptism in the St. Dustan, Stepney, Parish register, it was believed that William had a first wife by whom he had his first son Walter, and that the reference to him as bachelor in his marriage to Jane Young was a clerical error. The baptism confirms that Walter was born to the couple prior to their marriage.).[1]

Walter came to Massachusetts aboard the "Hercules of Dover" in 1634/5. [3]

Marriage Record for Walter Hatch & Elizabeth Holbrooke at Scituate is recorded as follows: "Walter and Eliz[abeth] Holbrooke, d. Thomas, May 6, 1650.[4][5][6]. Elizabeth is the mother of all of Walter's children that are mentioned in his will.

The name of Walter's second wife is unclear in the Marshfield records. They merely show: "Walter Hatch and --- ---stable, m. 5 Aug. 1674." [7] Goodwin says that family history says her name was Mary Stable. [8] And we can agree that her name was indeed Mary Stable by combining this marriage record with Walter's will cited below.

In a deed from John Hatch to Joseph Clap dated 19 Mar 1705/6. – land "granted to Walter Hatch by the prsent Comitttee ye 21 of february 1699/700 and one acre more of upland granted in the right of Elder Hatch and two acres of swamp land being part of a grant of 4 acres of Swamp land granted to the aforsd Walter Hatch late of Scituate deceased by the sd committee the 24th of May 1699:" [9] Charles Lathrop Pack, author of "Thomas Hatch of Barnstable ..." interpreted the above deed to say he died 24 May 1699 according to a deed from Walter's son John, dated 19 March 1705/6,[10] but the fact that the first mentioned grant was actually after the second mentioned grant negates this interpretation.

Walter's death was after the land grants on 24 May 1699 and 21 Feb 1699/1700 and before his inventory 1 April 1701.

Children

All born at Scituate:

  1. Hannah born 13 March 1651[11]
  2. Samuel born 22 December 1653[12]
  3. Jane born 1744[13]
  4. Antipas born 26 October 1658[14] died 7 December 1705[15]
  5. Bethia 1662[13]
  6. John 1664[13]
  7. Israel 25 March 1667[16]
  8. Joseph 9 December 1669[17]

Will [18]

Walter made his first Will on March 3, 1681/2. Apparently his son Antipas became incompetent, and Walter's final Will as signed on August 29, 1698, and proved on April 2, 1701, the inventory of his estate taken 01 April 1701.[19] In his Will, he mentioned:

  • wife: Mary
  • sons: Samuel, John, Israel, Antipas, Joseph
  • daughters: Jane Sherman, Bethia Ford

Research notes

The FamilySearch index lists last name at birth as Younge on some citations of baptismal record.[20] From a close reading of the record it is clear that Walter's last name was always meant Hatch.

Hi All, Working on Walter Hatch's Bio. I see that he is born and baptized before his parents marry. FS even has two versions of the citation to the parish records. One that calls him "Walter Younge". And another that names him "Walter Hatch". Is everyone still okay with leaving his LNAB as Hatch and not changing it to Younge?

"England, Middlesex Parish Registers, 1539-1988", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:66JX-RTR7 : 11 July 2022), Walter Younge, 1623. "England, Middlesex Parish Registers, 1539-1988", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:66NB-FQFG : 11 July 2022), Walter Hatch, 1623.

To conclude: I propose to mention the Birth name confusion seen on FS, but maintain Hatch as Walter's LNAB because of the weight of research at American Ancestors, all of which refers to Walter as Walter Hatch

From his arrival until his death he remained essentially British. He spoke like an Englishman, used the crown's money, and dressed in a doublet, waistcoat and britches. As town constable he walked the dirty streets carrying a six-foot brass-tipped staff, calling the time of night and the weather. He was also responsible for errant animals, public drunkenness and predator bounties entered into the "Animal Book".

Sorry, Raymond, as Bobbie pointed out below, Red House does not cite its sources, so it's not considered reliable.

Sorry, I knew I should of included. She is the Author of the book Red House about the history of a house various branches of the Hatch family of North Marshfield lived in.

Walter Hatch had an unusual death. He was struck by lightning and although it's not clear if he succumbed instantly it is presumed the major cause of his death . I feel that just adding this sentence to the "death" portion of his biography would humanize his life.

What does the author cite for the info about the lightening strike?

She was talking about the the storms with lightning strikes that would occur in the Scituate area

It's on page 67

There is no source for the claim. We need to find independent and preferably contemporaneous documentation of his cause of death.

Generally this red house Book is not reliable. It does not cite any sources.

This may be where she got the story: "History of the Briggs Family" (1938)

Still no original source

I've looked through the sources Torrey provides and I can find no mention of death by lightning, that includes Perley Derby, Descendents of William Hatch of Scituate and also a section on Walter in Walter Goodwin Davis, Joseph Neal Ancestry.

If there were a record of such a death, I believe it would have been included in at least one of them.

Thanks Chris. Glad someone else agrees with my interpretaion. Changing date to before probate.

Okay, got it -- to me, that reads rather clearly that Walter was alive on 24 May 1699 when the swampland was granted to him, and _still_ alive on 21 Feb. 1700 when he was granted the upland acreage. I don't think this helps ascertain his death date except to let us say that it was _after_ 21 February 1700 (and, _before_ the inventory of 1 April 1701, as Bobbie underscores below). I think "Thomas Hatch of Barnstable" is offering an erroneous interpretation of the text, incorrectly connecting "deceased by" with the May grant date.

See the bio I added the exact wording there (should have mentioned it before) and put the link in the citation.

Anne, are you saying that Walter's son John received the grant of land from his father in 1699 (as implied in the footnote at https://archive.org/details/thomashatchofbar00pack/page/38)... or that _Walter_ received the grant?? (Can you post a link to the deed?)
posted by Christopher Childs
We have a source for the 1699 date (a deed). I didn't think I would find said deed but... The language is somewhat ambiguous. There is the date 24 May 1699 when he recd a grant of land and another 21 Feb 1699/1700 (which is after the May date). And it speaks of in the right of Elder Hatch (Walter's father). Thoughts on interpreting this?
posted by Anne B
Walter's estate was inventoried 01 April 1701, will proved and letters of administration issued 02 April 1701. I've read through the documents (see source under Plymouth County Probate records) and there is no indication of a death in May 1699 in the probate file. There is no death for him in the Scituate VRs that I can find under any variation. The death date should probably be shown as before 01 April 1701, unless another source can be provided for the 1699 date.

The NEHGS record taken from "Early Marriages and Births at Scituate" confirms the m. date to "Elizabeth, dau. of Thos. Holbrook" as May 6, 1650. (See https://www.americanancestors.org/DB522/i/21083/219/426694842 .) This also makes sense when the birth of their first child is taken into consideration -- 1651. I'd suggest that the 1650 year be entered in the m. data field as well as the Bio, for consistency's sake.
posted by Christopher Childs
In the handwritten original, while the marriages just above it are clearly dated 1646 and 1649, Walter's -- and the marriage below it -- are in a separate group, suggesting a different year. At the extreme right end of Walter & Elizabeth's line, you can just barely make out 165_, apparently 1650. -- Marriages on the next page begin with 1658, so clearly, the dates do jump from group to group!
