Biography

Teresa Ellen "Tess" Hatch was born on 5th January 1835 in Hobart, Van Dieman's Land (later Tasmania, Australia).[1] She was the second daughter of English-Irish emigrants, Robert Hatch, a hotelier who had owned a bakery in Newry, Ireland, and his wife, Mary Ann Thompson.

The family later settled in Goulburn, New South Wales, where her father became a successful auctioneer and superintendent of police.

On the 1st of January 1851 in St Matthew's Church of England, Queanbeyan, New South Wales,[2] Tess married Henry Colden Antill Jnr, the second son of Major Henry Colden Antill Snr, who had been the aide-de-camp to Governor Lachlan Macquarie from 1810 to 1821 and then pastoralist, magistrate and police superintendent of Picton, New South Wales. Henry Jnr inherited the 900-acre Coldenham property at Picton when his father passed away in 1852. Henry and Tess's first two children were born there in 1852 and 1854. By 1857, the young family was living back at Queanbeyan.

The children of Tess and Henry's marriage were:

Henry turned out to be the 'black sheep' of the Antill family. Although he had means, he turned to crime, being convicted of stealing from a shepherd, unlawful use of a horse, and robbery under arms. It appears that he was 'exiled' to New Zealand, returning in 1876, a free man. Tess, who Henry had abandoned with their six children, took him to court in November 1876, seeking maintenance and child support. The court ruled in Teresa's favour, however when payment was not forthcoming, a warrant was issued for his arrest. He had 'shot though' however. He was found at Picton in 1880 and brought before the bench. Once more refusing to pay anything, he was taken by the police to face trial in Sydney for "disobeying an order of the court." Found guilty, he was imprisoned until he 'paid up'. There is no evidence that he did pay, however he was released from prison.[10]

Following a difficult 31-year marriage, Tess passed away at the early age of 47 years in 1882 at Queanbeyan and is buried in Queanbeyan Cemetery, New South Wales.[11]
