Biography

Estes was 1 of at least 2 sons born of Captain Estes Hatch of Savannah, Georgia (b. 1724/5 in Boston, Province of Massachusetts Bay) and his wife Vina Moro de Marco the daughter of the Spanish Governor of St. Augustine. Estes brother was Gonsalvo.

On June 1, 1776, Estes enlisted for a term of 2 months in Captain Darrell's Company under the command of General Charles Lee and served the aforesaid at Charlestown, South Carolina until honorably discharged. The Battle of Sullivan's Island (Fort Sullivan) was fought on June 28, 1776. It took place near Charlestown, South Carolina, during the 1st British attempt to capture the city.

On or about April 1st, 1778, Estes enlisted as a Mariner or Sailor on board the Frigate Warren at Providence, Rhode Island under the command of Captain John B. Hopkins for the term of one year. He served on board the Warren in the Continental service until some time in February 1779 when he was honorably discharged at Boston on account of sickness (smallpox), having been considerably in the hospital at Sewell's Point, after having served about 10 months of his term of enlistment. The Warren slipped through the British blockade of Narragansett Bay on or about March 8, 1778 and escaped into the open sea. Before she put into Boston on March 23rd, the Warren took 2 prizes, the ship Neptune, bound from England to Philadelphia with a cargo of provisions, and another supply vessel. The Warren conducted a 2nd cruise off the eastern seaboard in the autumn cruising for a time with the Massachusetts State Navy ship Tyrannicide. The Warren remained at Boston during the winter of 1778 not to sortie again until March 13, 1779.

Estes had 1 child by his 1st wife. On January 2, 1803, he married for his 2nd wife the widow Lucy Cutler Dodge of Marshfield, Washington County, Vermont by whom he had 3 children (2 sons and 1 daughter): Estes (1804-1838), Mahitable (Hitty) (b. 1808) and Peter (b. 1811).

In 1820, when Estes made application for a Revolutionary War pension, he and his family were residing in Middlesex, Washington County, Vermont.
