Biography

The following information and GPS location provided by Michael V Drachman (#47533584):

This marker sits in front of Elnora Hatch Heads Headstone. Wells Hatch was Elnora's Father born July 19, 1789 in Duanesburgh, NY, died Feb 22, 1865, Falls Church, Fairfax, Va. Mother was Mary Rexford, Mary marries Wells Nov 24 1813, they have 9 children.. Elnora 2nd from the oldest.

Elnora's grandfather on the Hatch side was Timothy Hatch married to Ruth Wells, they have 8 children..

Now,, the interesting stuff that needs some scrutiny,, The marker for Wells indicates that Wells was a Captain,,in the Continental Army.. This is where the ? comes in.. Record shows the Continental Army being dissolved in 1783. The 1st and 2nd Regiments went on to as the Legion of the United States in 1792 under General Anthony Wayne and in 1796 became the United States Army.

So,, something does not add up with the marker.... I cannot find him in the Officers sheets for the Continental Army..

So,, l suppose one lets the dog lie hear but you do have Elnora,,we know her father is Wells, we have some dates for you to use with place names..

The following information was provided by L. Mueller (#47937956):

I've a book from Otter Tail Co, Minnesota dated 1916 which has a bio of Well Hatch's grandson Adsit C Hatch b July 12 1855. This bio mentions grandparents Well (and Mary Rexford) being a soldier in the First Virginia Cavalry, his death occurring in 1862 when he was 74 years old.

Well's father was Timothy Hatch, who was son of Jethro Hatch a Major in the Revolutionary War and took part in the battle of Ticonderoga. Jethro died at 96 years in 1856.

Timothy, father of Wells joined the Revolutionary War at age 17 and took part in the battle of Saratoga.

Adsit C Hutch died in Otter Tail Co, Minnesota. He was in possession of Jethro's Revolutionary War sword.

Hope this helps clear up the headstone question of where Wells served.
