Biography

Charles swam the Wabash River at night to join the Confederates. He signed up on May 15, 1861 in Jackson County, TN. He served under General Cheatham and fought in the battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, Horseshoe Bend, Mich. Ridge, Lookout Mtn, and others. Member of the KKK. Became business partners with son-in-law Henry Umbaugh in blacksmithing for a while. 1870 census shows he was a blacksmith. Baptized into Christ along with his wife, Nancy Jane, and daughter, Ellen, at Salem, TN. He is buried in the Winchester City Cemetery beside his wife, Jane, his son Grover, and his grandson, Billy.
