Biography

Matthew was born in about 1824 and was the son of William Hatfield and Sarah Hodgetts. He was baptised on 26 December 1825 with his birth date given as 7 March 1824, but this was only 8 months older than his sister (who was also baptised the same day) so was possibly a mistake.[1] Although baptised on the same day as his sister, Sarah, the two baptisms were recorded on different pages suggesting that they were baptised at different times.

He was not the Matthew Hatfield who died in 1857 in Birmingham, as this was an infant aged 17 days, a line to follow is that Matthew possibly moved to New York.
