Biography

Jonathan was born in 1738. He is the son of Benjamin Hathaway and Abigial Clemons.

He first married Lydia Peck on 20 Jan 1759 in Morristown, New Jersey.[1]

He and Lydia had the following children:

  1. Nathaniel Hathaway, b. 1761
  2. Sarah Hathaway, b. 1763
  3. Timothy Hathaway, b. 1765
  4. Thankful Hathaway
  5. Phebe Hathaway, b. 1769
  6. Abigail Hathaway, b. 1772
  7. Jonathan Hathaway, b. 1773
  8. Lydia Hathaway, b. 1779

He married a second time to Sarah Keen Prudden, widow of Isaac Prudden[2] on 26 March 1803 in Morris, New Jersey.

He passed away in 1814. His Will is dated 8 Apr 1814. Mentions wife Sarah. There is a prenup mentioned that in lieu of a dower she would receive a yearly sum. Son Jonathan. Daughters, Sarah Case (and two sons from another marriage), Thankful Lamson, Abigail Tucker & Phebe (unable to care for herself). Wit: Margaret Orsburn, Eliphalet Osborn & James Garrigues[3]

Research Notes

1. He owed the "Hathaway Forge"[4] and also owned a Grist Mill on the Whippaning River which he sold in 1803.[5] Benjamin Hathaway gave his son Jonathan his blacksmith tools in his will.[6] Benjamin's grist mill was also on the Whippaning River.
