Biography

Hannah was a Friend (Quaker)

Hannah was born about 1660 in Dartmouth, Plymouth Colony. She was the daughter of Arthur Hathaway Jr. and Sarah (Cooke) Hathaway. [1]

She married George Cadman about 1683 Portsmouth, Rhode Island. [1]

They had a daughter Elizabeth born about 1684. [1]

She died before 14 Mar 1749 in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay.[1][2]

Will & Probate

Note: The will of Hannah Cadman was dated 13 February 1748/9, and probate
was completed on 2 May 1749. An inventory of her estate was taken on 14 March 1748/9, and totalled 1,717 pounds, 19 shillings, old tenor.
Hannah Cadman died testate, and her will was proved 2 May 1749. The Mayflower Descendant provides a transcription of the will. The Mayflower Descendant abstract (Mayflower Descendant, Volume 22, Number 1, January 1920, Pages 2-5, on FHL Microfilm 0,161,972, also recorded in Bristol County (Massachusetts) Probate Records, Volume 11, Page 705) of the will reads:
"Hannah Cadman of Dartmouth ... widow" made her will on 13 February 1748/9. Bequests were made to:
To "my Daughter Elizabeth White Wife to William of sd Dartmouth all my Wearing apparril also my Silver tankard and Smalest Silver Spoon."
Top "my Grandson William White my Great Bible my Bigest Silver Cup and my silver Spoon marked with the Letters W C and fifty pounds in mony or Bills of Credit old teanor."
To "my son [clearly meant 'Grandson'] George White one silver Spoon and my Gun which was his Grandfather Cadmans together with my Cubbord that standsi n the Chamber I also give unto him my sd Grandson George White all my farming tools as Cart yoaks Chains axes hoes and other tools."
To "my Grand daughter Sarah Brown Wife of John Brown of Tivertown my small silver Cup and one Silver Spoon and" 20 pounds "in mony or Bills of Credit old teanor."
To "my Grand daughter Hannah Taber Wife of William Taber of Dartmouth" 25 pounds "in mony or Bills of Credit old teanor."
"To my two Great Granddaughters Hannah Slocum and Mary Slocum Daughters to my Grand Daughter Elizabeth Slocum deceased" 30 pounds "in Mony or Bills of Credit old teanor ... that is to say to Each of them fiften pounds as they Shall Come to the age of Eighteen years but If Either of them Shall die Before they Receive their portion ... the next surviveing Sister Shall have it."
To "five of my other Grand Children Beside who are above named (viz) Roger White Christopher White Oliver White Thomas and Susanna White to Each of them one Silver Spoon to be delivered to Each of them by my Executor ... when they severaly shall be Capable to Receive them Either by age or Gurdains."
"All the Remainder of my Estate ... Shall Be Equaly Divided (Except what I shall hear after Give to Grand daughter Susanna White) Which I Equaly so Give to My Daughter Elizabeth White and my Six Grand Children namely William White Roger White Christopher White Oliver White Abner White Thomas White and Susanna White But ... my Grand daughter Susanna White Shall have my Best feather Bed and Bolster in part of her Equal Shear of the Whole so Give to my Daughter and Grand Children."
"Grandson William White" was appointed sole executor.
The will was signed by a mark. The witnesses were Benjamin Tripp, Joseph Tripp and Beriah Goddard. Benjamin Tripp and Joseph Tripp made oath to the will, at Freetown, on 2 May 1749. The will was probated on 2 May 1749, and administration was granted to William White of Dartmouth, yeoman, the executor named in the will (Recorded in Bristol County (Massachusetts) Probate Records, Volume 11, Page 702).
On 14 March 1749 at Dartmouth, Joseph Brownell, Richard Cornell and Timothy Tripp, all of Dartmouth, were sworn as appraisers, before Silvester Richmond, Justice of the Peace at Freetown (unrecorded document).
The inventory was taken at Dartmouth on 14 March 1749. The total estate was 1,717 pounds, 19 shillings, old tenor. Included was "money and Bonds" 649 pounds, 12 shillings, 6 pence; "Rent" 25 pounds, 19 shillings, 6 pence; "a Quarter of an old Stable" 2 pounds. William White and the three appraisers made oath to the inventory on 2 May 1749 at Freetown (Recorded in Bristol County (Massachusetts) Probate Records, Volume 11, Page 705).
