Biography

Charles was born in 1854. He was the son of George Hathaway and Sarah Smedley.

He was baptised on 13 August 1854 at Ellwood, Parkend, St Paul, Gloucestershire, England. His father was a Collier of Ellwood.^[1]

UK Census Date 1861: Living with his parents and six siblings in Park End, West Dean, Monmouthshire, England. Aged 6.

When he was 8 years old he emigrated from England to New Zealand with his parents and siblings on board the Ship Brothers Pride, departed London, England 23 Jul 1863 to Lyttelton, New Zealand arriving 8 Dec 1863.
