Biography

Charles was born in 1854. He was the son of George Hathaway and Sarah Smedley.

He was baptised on 13 August 1854 at Ellwood, Parkend, St Paul, Gloucestershire, England. His father was a Collier of Ellwood.[1]

UK Census Date 1861: Living with his parents and six siblings in Park End, West Dean, Monmouthshire, England. Aged 6.

When he was 8 years old he emigrated from England to New Zealand with his parents and siblings on board the Ship Brothers Pride, departed London, England 23 Jul 1863 to Lyttelton, New Zealand arriving 8 Dec 1863.

Charles married Mary Sharplin in 1874.

They had six children (two of whom died young).

His Mary passed away in 1885 at the age of 29.

Charles married, secondly, Amelia Martha Day on 29 September 1894 in Wellington.

They had six children:

  2. Elsie May Zepherene (b. 1897, d. 1975)
  3. Amelia Martha (b. 1898, d. 1992)
  4. Mabel Eileen (b. 1903, d. 1977)
  5. Francis Edward (b. 1907, d. 1980)
  6. Ena Doris (b. 1908, d. 1910)

He passed away in 1944 at the age of 89 and is buried in Karori Cemetery and Crematorium, Wellington, Wellington City, Wellington, New Zealand[2]. PLOT: Public2 103M
