Biography

Thomas was born after 1731. He passed away about 1798. [1] The birth of Thomas Hathaway is recorded as the 18th of September, 1731 in the Dartmouth, New Bedford, Massachusetts vital records. His parents are listed as Jonathan and Abigail. [2] The marriage intention of “Thomas Hathaway the 2nd of Dartmouth” and Molly Gilbert of Freetown is also recorded in Dartmouth - dated the 17th of October 1767. [3] The obituary for Thomas Hathaway was published in the Yates County Whig (from the Penn Yan Democrat) the 2nd day of June, 1798. It states he died Sunday, the 22nd of May, 1798 and that he was born in Bedford Massachusetts in 1768[4]. Along with other biographical information, public service and recognitions, it mention his younger brother Gilbert and wife, Mary Botsford who he married in “1798” (living at that time, age 81). The couple had 3 sons and 4 daughters.

Research Notes

Although the marriage intention entry says “2nd” he should not be confused with Thomas Hathaway, Jr. Both Thomas, Jr. and Thomas Sr. are well documented not only in vital records and local histories of the Yates County, New York, but contemporary records of the day including newspapers. The son of Thomas Sr., (Thomas Hathaway (1768-1853) married Molly (Gilbert) Hathaway (1739-abt.1783), daughter of Elnathan Botsford and Lucy Stone.
