Stephen Hathaway was born September 20, 1836 in Michigan. He died on July 31, 1889 in Allen, Indiana at age 52. Stephen is buried at the Eel River Cemetery in Dunn Mill, Allen, Indiana.
Son of John Hathaway (1811-1886) and Hannah Chase (1809-1849).
Stephen’s mother, Hannah Chase, died in 1849. His father married Sarah Ann (Gump) Long c. 1850. "Stephen was raised on his parent's Eel River homestead and he received a good common school education and attended 6 months at Perry Center seminary." Jack LaCroix Throp, 1986.
1850 United States Census, Eel River Township, Allen, Indiana: John Hathaway is head of household, a farmer age 40, with wife, Sarah Ann Hathaway age 34, and children Stephen Hathaway age 14, Philip Hathaway age 12, Lucinda (Long) age 11, Elizabeth Hathaway age 9, Henry (Long) age 9, John Hathaway age 6, and George (Long) age 5. (Note: This is a blended family with children from both John and Sarah's previous marriages. Lucinda, Henry and George are not John's children. The census taker erroneously gave all the children the name "Hathaway." Names are more clear in the 1860 census.)

Hathaway age 44, and children Stephen Hathaway, a farmer age 24, Philip Hathaway, a laborer age 22, John Hathaway age 17, Betsey Hathaway age 19, and Sarah Hathaway age 2. Also in the home are Lucinda J. Long age 21, Henry F. Long, a laborer age 19, and George N. Long age 14.
Stephen Hathaway married Mary E. Fair on January 22, 1865 in Fort Wayne, Allen, Indiana.

"Stephen was elected Justice of the Peace in 1882 on the Democrat ticket and was again elected in 1886. His beautiful 200 acre farm in Eel River Township was under good of cultivation and with substantial buildings. He was a member of the Masonic Order," Jack LaCroix Throp, 1986.
