Biography

This profile states origins of Arthur Hathaway Sr., with no proof. He was listed as "of Wales," but linked to a family of Kingscote, Gloucestershire. The proposed Welsh origin comes from an 1878 reader query to the NEHGR[1] asking for information about (to sum up) likely brothers John and Arthur Hathaway, from the "Welsh counties;" John removing to Taunton and Arthur staying in Plymouth Colony. Where the writer got this information is not stated.

It seems possible that there was actually only one Arthur Hathaway in Plymouth: the man who appeared in Marshfield in 1643, and then married Sarah Cooke in 1652. Since he only had to be 16 to appear on the list of those able to bear arms, any birth date prior to 1627 would suffice for this man. Assuming he was born in 1620, his death in 1711 in Dartmouth (that assigned to Arthur "jr") would make him 91 at death, a not unreasonable age.

Arthur does not appear in the "Great Migration" series; his earliest known appearance so far is 1643 in Marshfield, Plymouth Colony, on the list of those able to bear arms, Marshfield, 1643.[2]

He supposedly had a son, Arthur, who married Sarah Cooke, but no other information is yet known about this man.[3] It should be noted that the marriage of the younger Arthur Hathaway to Sarah Cooke is recorded; there does not seem to be any documentary proof that the Arthur of 1643 in Marshfield was the father of the Arthur who married Sarah Cooke. Obviously possible and even likely given the names, but not yet proven.

His death is stated, without source or location, as 1671.

Supposed Children

  1. Arthur Hathaway, Jr., m. November 20, 1652, Sarah Cooke.[4]
  2. Susannah Hathaway, m. abt 1664, William Palmer.

If this person is of questionable existence, shouldn’t son Arthur be detached?

Thank you, Marina.

You earlier (2020) wrote, "I noticed that Arthur Hathaway is not in the Great Migration Directory."

Given our questionable existence and statement of earliest notice as 1643, are there any objections to both severing the relationship and removing the Puritan Great Migration project box, co-management and maintenance category? --Gene

Edited to add: See Brad's comment and Eunice's reply on profile of the "son," Arthur Hathaway Jr. (1625-1711).

Maxfield Hathaway-1 and Hathaway-479 appear to represent the same person because: dup profile with wrong last name, ready to merge

There were 2 requests to merge the 3 Arthur's Hathaway-479 / Hathaway-920 and then there is Maxfield_Hathaway-1 which is I believe not the correct formatting for the ID.? and the profile has no sources or a bio... may I do it now? one request was 7 years ago and one 4 years ago. please? A Hathaway Descendant, Carole

All three look like duplicates and should be merged, but I noticed that Arthur Hathaway is not in the Great Migration Directory, and the only mention I could find of Arthur Hathaway Sr in the sources provided was in the NEHGR reference, which is only a query and not really a primary source. Are there any additional sources that show there was an Arthur Sr in New England. And is there anything connecting Arthur to parents Thomas Hathaway and Margaret (Maxfield) Hathaway?

Do not know. but this is a Project managed profile. not sure, think I will contact one of them to change it, OH or is that YOU? ooops

The earliest reference I found for Arthur Hathaway was 1643, on the list able to bear arms. I added it to the biography with inline citation.
The connection to Thomas and Margaret (Maxfield) is incorrect. Not only are they are several forward generations removed, they also didn't have a son named Arthur. I think who ever created this connection confused this couple with another speculated to be Arthur's parents, also named Thomas and Margaret.

Arthur Maxfield_Hathaway-1 is clearly a dup of this Hathaway-479 profile with no sources so that is just a merge-away request, really. But THIS profile clearly needs more research in Plymouth etc.

Hathaway-479 and Hathaway-1784 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge. complementary information. Thanks, Becky Syphers
Reworking citations and credits for wikitree contributors. A work in progress. See Cooke-19 and Rice-52 examples. Feedback welcome. Thank you, Mike
