Biography

Hatoyama Yukio was born in the Koishikawa ward of Tokyo on 11 February 1947, the eldest son and middle child of Hatoyama Iichirō and Ishibashi Yasuko. He attended the University of Tokyo, graduating with a degree in engineering in 1969. He then went on to attend Stanford University, obtaining a doctorate in industrial engineering in 1976.

While at Stanford, Yukio met his future wife and married in Santa Clara County, California on 29 March 1975. He had a son during his marriage while still attending Stanford. After obtaining a doctorate, Yukio served as a professor of engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and Senshu University from 1976 to 1984.

Yukio's political career began in 1986 when he was elected to the House of Representatives as a representative for Hokkaido's 4th district, serving with other members from the same district at that time. He was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party upon election. He later broke from the party in 1993.

In 1996, Yukio and his younger brother Kunio co-created the Democratic Party of Japan with funding from their mother. That same year, he was elected to represent Hokkaido's newly created 9th district. He was the chairman of his party and leader of the opposition from 1999 to 2002. Afterward, he served as the party's secretary general until 2009 when he succeeded as party leader.

On 16 September 2009, as his party gained enough seats for a majority in the House of Representatives in the previous month, Yukio became the Prime Minister of Japan. He resigned as prime minister on 8 June 2010 after almost 9 months, but he remained in the Diet until retiring from politics on 16 December 2012. He was expelled from the DPJ soon after.

Despite his retirement, Yukio continued to show opinions and make comments on contemporary affairs throughout Japan and the rest of the world. He changed the first kanji of his given name from 由 to 友 in 2013, even though the former is still widely used by him and the media as of 2023.
