" NICHOLAS HOUK, Private, North Carolina Line, Revolutionary War
Mr. John Lair mentions in his book, Rockcastle Roots, “there is a tradition that the progenitors of the Houk family in America were four brothers who came from Holland to Pennsylvania in 1733. One of these, George, is believed to have been the father of Nicholas Houk, the first of the name to reach Rockcastle County, Kentucky”.
According to his pension application, Nicholas states he was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in 1740. Nicholas moved to North Carolina where he married Sarah Mauser in Lincoln County, 1772. Nicholas and Sarah had been married 4 or 5 years and had two children (Rebecca and Fredrick) before Nicholas was drafted into the Army of the United States in Polk County, North Carolina. The Houks came to Kentucky and first lived in what was then Washington County, where they lived on a farm of 100 acres that was purchased in 1814. They sold their land in Washington County to Thomas Christian for $30 and moved to Rockcastle County, January 23, 1819. Nicholas and Sarah had eight children altogether, but now only five can be confirmed and who were still living in September 1845.

I am proposing g a merge as this is another profile of a well established individual with lots of descendents...I mention this because when a person was born in the 18th century or before it is even more reason to triple check for established profiles. Thanks!
